Craft
Noun:
An art, trade, or occupation requiring special skill,
especially manual skill
Verb: To make, create or fashion with
great care, skill and ingenuity, especially
by hand
By its very definition, craft beer encompasses
both a noun and a verb. Whether you are referencing
the finished product, or the process that brought it
to fruition, it is all about the craft. Perhaps that's
why craft beer is the fastest growing segment of alcoholic
beverages in the U.S. In fact, according to the San
Diego Brewers Guild (the third-largest guild in the
U.S.), San Diego is by far the largest city or county
guild in the country, and its breweries have become
known for excellence, originality and award winning
beer, making it the Capital of Craft!
Although craft beer was not born in San
Diego County, California is its birthplace. According
to the California Craft Brewers Association, in 1965
Fritz Maytag took over controlling interest in the Anchor
Brewery in San Francisco, which was on the verge of
going out of business. He soon began brewing authentic,
artful beers and reintroducing lost styles. He proved
that Americans were ready for a different kind of beer;
beer with flavor, diversity and history. His Anchor
Brewery became the first "craft" brewery since prohibition
and was the inspiration that sparked a revolution in
brewing. The American craft brewing movement had begun.
Maytag was followed by New Albion, in 1977 in Sonoma,
the first American modern microbrewery, and then by
the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico in 1980, that
created the American-style Pale Ale.
Today, there are over 700 breweries operating
across California. As a consumer, what this means to
you is that you have unlimited choices when it comes
to enjoying the craft of others. As a crafter, or if
you are considering becoming one, what this means to
you is that there has never been a better opportunity
to pursue your craft, or expand your brewery.
But with opportunity comes choices and
responsibilities. How can I best protect my investment
and limit my liability? How can I grow my business,
while making sure all my bases are covered? As my employee
base expands, how do I insure their well-being?
These are just a few of the issues you will want to
consider.
